A Day in the Life
An Archivist/Special Collections Librarian focuses on managing and preserving rare, unique, and valuable materials, such as historical literary manuscripts, rare books, and unique records. A typical day involves cataloging new acquisitions, ensuring proper environmental controls for fragile items, assisting specialized researchers, and curating exhibits to showcase collections.
- Acquire, process, and catalog rare books, manuscripts, and special collections.
- Create detailed descriptive metadata and finding aids for unique materials.
- Monitor and maintain optimal environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) for preservation.
- Provide specialized reference services to researchers, scholars, and the public.
- Plan and curate exhibits to showcase special collections.
- Conduct preservation assessments and coordinate conservation treatments.
- Manage digital surrogates of rare materials and digital preservation efforts.
- Develop and implement policies for access and use of special collections.
Work Environment
