A Day in the Life
An Art Conservator / Restorer spends their day meticulously examining, treating, and preserving damaged or aging paintings and other artworks. This involves scientific analysis, cleaning, consolidation, inpainting, and documentation to stabilize and restore the aesthetic integrity of art pieces.
- Conduct thorough examination of artworks using scientific methods (e.g., UV light, microscopy)
- Analyze materials and techniques used in the artwork's creation
- Develop and implement conservation treatment plans tailored to each piece
- Perform cleaning, consolidation of flaking paint, and structural repairs
- Execute inpainting (retouching) to integrate repairs while maintaining historical accuracy
- Document all stages of conservation, including photographs and written reports
- Advise on proper environmental conditions for display and storage of artworks
- Conduct research on art materials, historical techniques, and conservation ethics
Work Environment
