A Day in the Life
A CNC/CAM Programmer spends their day translating engineering designs into precise instructions (G-code) for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. This involves using CAM software to create toolpaths, simulating machining operations, optimizing programs for efficiency and quality, and troubleshooting issues on the shop floor.
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and 3D models to understand part specifications
- Select appropriate tools, cutting speeds, and feed rates for machining operations
- Use CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software to generate efficient toolpaths
- Write and edit G-code and M-code programs for CNC milling, turning, and grinding machines
- Simulate machining processes to detect potential collisions or errors before actual production
- Optimize CNC programs for reduced cycle times, improved surface finish, and tool life
- Collaborate with machinists and engineers to troubleshoot programming and machining issues
- Perform first-article inspections to verify part accuracy and quality
