A Day in the Life
You teach Commerce, Business Studies, Accounting, or Economics at school or university level — building students' commercial literacy and preparing them for professional qualifications and careers in business and finance.
- Deliver Commerce/Business Studies/Accounting lessons aligned with O/L and A/L syllabi
- Teach core commercial concepts — accounting entries, business organisation, economics principles
- Prepare students for national examinations (O/L Commerce, A/L Combined Mathematics, A/L Economics)
- Guide practical accounting exercises and business case studies
- Advise students on professional qualifications (AAT, CIMA, ACCA) and career pathways
- Mark assignments, tests, and projects with constructive feedback
- Coordinate with industry professionals for guest sessions (CIMA SL, ICASL, etc.)
- Support students from Commerce A/L stream with university and professional course applications
Work Environment
School or university classroom — government school, private school, or higher education institution. Commerce teachers are found in virtually every Sri Lankan secondary school as Commerce is one of the most popular A/L streams. University lecturers in business and management are at SLIIT, NSBM, and all national universities' management faculties.
Typical hours: 42h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
School term hours with holidays. Exam season increases marking workload. A/L tuition classes are common after school hours for income supplement.
