A Day in the Life
You teach fine arts — drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, or art history — at secondary school, art college, or university level, guiding students to develop technical skills and artistic expression.
- Plan and deliver fine arts lessons covering drawing, painting, sculpture, or art history
- Demonstrate techniques and guide hands-on practice in the studio
- Provide critique and formative feedback on student artwork
- Assess practical portfolios and written art history papers
- Prepare students for O/L Art, A/L Art, or diploma/degree programmes
- Set up and maintain studio spaces, tools, and materials
- Organise student exhibitions and showcase events
- Engage in own artistic practice and professional development
Work Environment
Studio classroom or art department at a national school, private school, or tertiary institution. Sri Lanka has fine arts programmes at the University of the Visual and Performing Arts (UVPA) in Colombo and Kelaniya University's art faculty. The government school curriculum includes Art as an O/L subject. Private art schools and academies in Colombo also employ fine arts teachers.
