A Day in the Life
You teach History at a government school in Sri Lanka, covering ancient, medieval, and modern history — including Sri Lankan and world history — to students preparing for O/L and A/L national examinations.
- Plan and deliver History lessons for assigned grade levels (O/L and/or A/L)
- Cover Sri Lankan history (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, colonial, independence periods) and world history
- Prepare students for O/L History and A/L History examinations
- Conduct essay-writing training and source-based question practice
- Create or adapt teaching materials including timelines, maps, and document excerpts
- Mark assignments, structured essays, and examination papers
- Lead school-level history projects, heritage visits, or cultural events
- Participate in in-service training and curriculum review sessions (NIE)
Work Environment
Classroom at a government school, primarily at secondary level. History is a core subject in the Sri Lanka government school curriculum at O/L level. At A/L level, History is offered under the Arts stream. Some schools have dedicated social studies or humanities departments. A/L History tutoring is also in demand in the private sector.
