A Day in the Life
An Interior Designer's day involves meeting clients, developing design concepts, selecting materials and finishes, creating detailed drawings, and overseeing the implementation of designs on-site. They balance creative vision with practical considerations and client needs.
- Meet with clients to understand their needs, preferences, and budget
- Develop design concepts and present mood boards, sketches, and 3D renderings
- Select and specify furniture, fixtures, equipment (FF&E), materials, and color schemes
- Create detailed floor plans, elevations, and construction drawings using CAD software
- Prepare cost estimates and project timelines
- Coordinate with architects, contractors, suppliers, and other professionals
- Oversee on-site installation and ensure design specifications are met
- Manage project budgets and timelines
- Research new trends, materials, and sustainable design practices
- Source and procure decorative items and accessories
Work Environment
Work is split between an office/studio for design work and client meetings, and various external locations like client homes/offices, construction sites, and showrooms. The environment can be fast-paced and requires adaptability to different settings and client personalities.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Work-life balance can be good, but project deadlines, client demands, and site visits can sometimes require extended hours or weekend work.
