About This Role
Teaching vocal and instrumental music to students in schools or private institutes.
A Day in the Life
You teach music — theory, practical instrument skills, vocal performance, or music appreciation — at a school or music institute, developing students' musical literacy and performance abilities.
- Plan and deliver music lessons covering theory, notation, rhythm, and practical performance
- Teach an instrument (piano, guitar, violin, tabla, traditional Sri Lankan percussion) at beginner to advanced levels
- Prepare students for O/L Music, A/L Music, or external music examinations (Trinity, ABRSM, Royal Conservatoire)
- Conduct group music appreciation and music history sessions
- Direct and rehearse school ensembles, choirs, orchestras, or cultural performance groups
- Organise and manage school concerts, cultural shows, and music competitions
- Assess students' performance, theory knowledge, and musical progress
- Maintain musical instruments and coordinate equipment procurement
Work Environment
Music classroom, practice room, or performance hall at a school or private music institute. Sri Lanka has a rich musical culture spanning Western classical, Sinhala baila, traditional kandyan drumming, and Carnatic music. Government schools offer Music as an O/L subject. Private music institutes (Yamahas, Trinity-affiliated schools) and prestigious private schools employ specialist music teachers.
