NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is Sri Lanka's national framework for vocational skills, administered by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC). It has 7 levels: Levels 1–3 for basic skills (after O/L), Levels 4–5 for technician-level skills (equivalent to diploma level), and Levels 6–7 for supervisory and management roles. NVQ certificates are recognized by government employers and private sector companies in Sri Lanka and can also be used for overseas employment recognition.

VTA (Vocational Training Authority) is the main government vocational training provider in Sri Lanka, offering NVQ-accredited courses across 200+ training centres island-wide. NAITA (National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority) provides industry-based apprenticeship training, where students learn on the job at approved companies. Both award NVQ certificates recognized across Sri Lanka. VTA is better for full-time structured courses; NAITA is better for learning while earning at a company.

Yes. NVQ-qualified tradespeople are in high demand in Sri Lanka, especially in construction, electrical, plumbing, automotive, hospitality, and garment industries. Electricians, plumbers, masons, motor mechanics, and hotel service staff with NVQ Level 4–5 can earn LKR 40,000–120,000+ per month. NVQ certificates are also recognized by Middle Eastern employers (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE) who hire Sri Lankan workers through government labour bureaux.
