Acoustical Design Consultant
Building acoustics sits at a beautiful intersection of physics and architecture — you use science to make spaces sound right for the people who use them. In Sri Lanka, the field is small but growing, with hotel acoustics and hospital design creating steady work. The IOA Diploma opens the door to overseas careers in UK, Australia, and Gulf where building acoustics is a well-established profession. For physics graduates who want applied, consultancy-oriented work, this is a rewarding specialism.”
About This Role
Analyzing sound propagation and vibration using wave mechanics and industrial simulations.
A Day in the Life
Designs acoustic environments for buildings — specifying sound insulation, absorption, and noise control systems for offices, hotels, auditoriums, hospitals, and residential developments in Sri Lanka.
- Review architectural drawings and identify acoustic design requirements at early design stage
- Calculate sound insulation requirements between rooms and floors — airborne and impact noise
- Specify acoustic treatment materials — absorption panels, floating floors, acoustic ceilings
- Model room acoustics for performance spaces — RT60, clarity, speech intelligibility
- Review mechanical services drawings for HVAC noise and duct-borne sound transmission
- Carry out pre-completion acoustic testing to verify performance against specification
- Prepare acoustic design reports and specifications for inclusion in tender documents
