Acoustical Engineer
Acoustical Engineering is a discipline where physics meets the real world of buildings, factories, and communities. You solve problems that affect people directly — noise that disrupts sleep, vibration that damages structures, sound that makes communication impossible. In Sri Lanka the market is niche but steady, and the IOA qualification opens strong overseas pathways. For physics graduates who want engineering-impact work rather than research, this is a satisfying and distinctive career.”
About This Role
Manages sound and vibration in environments, products, and medical equipment like ultrasound.
A Day in the Life
Solves noise and vibration problems across building, industrial, and environmental settings — combining measurement, analysis, and engineering design to deliver solutions that meet regulatory and performance requirements.
- Investigate noise complaints and identify dominant noise sources through measurement and analysis
- Design passive noise control measures — enclosures, barriers, damping systems, silencers
- Conduct vibration surveys and specify vibration isolation solutions
- Assess occupational noise exposure in factories and prepare noise at work reports
- Review planning applications for acoustic acceptability under CEA/UDA requirements
- Specify and oversee installation of noise control products
- Prepare technical reports for clients, regulators, and planning authorities
Work Environment
Environmental consultancy firms, engineering companies, and industrial facilities in Sri Lanka. The Acoustical Engineer has a broader scope than specialist building or environmental acoustics roles — often handling both environmental noise and industrial noise assignments. Key clients include industrial facilities, property developers, and local authorities.
Typical hours: 46h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Generally predictable hours with occasional site work outside standard hours for background noise surveys.
