About This Role
Calculating orbital mechanics and flight paths for satellites and aircraft using pure and applied math.
A Day in the Life
Analyses the flight dynamics, stability, and control characteristics of aircraft and aerospace systems — using computational simulation, mathematical modelling, and data analysis to assess performance across flight envelopes.
- Develop and validate 6-DOF flight dynamics simulation models for aircraft and UAVs
- Analyse aircraft stability margins — static and dynamic stability in all axes
- Perform flight envelope analysis — load cases, stall characteristics, manoeuvre limits
- Process flight test data to extract aerodynamic coefficients and validate models
- Conduct aeroelastic analysis for structural flexibility effects on dynamics
- Prepare flight dynamics reports for certification and design review
- Collaborate with control systems engineers on autopilot and flight control law design
Work Environment
In Sri Lanka, aerospace dynamics roles are rare and primarily limited to the SLAF (Sri Lanka Air Force) technical directorate, the Sri Lanka Aviation College, UAV research projects at universities, and the Arthur C. Clarke Institute. The field is considerably more developed overseas — Australia (DSTG, Boeing Australia), UAE (EDGE Group), and UK (BAE Systems, Airbus, DSTL) offer the primary employment markets for Sri Lankan aerodynamics graduates.
