AI Research Scientist
AI research science is a rare career where you can genuinely shape the trajectory of one of the most consequential technologies in history. For Sri Lankan researchers, the field offers something unusual: your work is evaluated entirely on its intellectual quality, not on geography. A strong paper from the University of Moratuwa is read and cited at the same conference as work from MIT or Oxford. The pathway is demanding — typically requiring a PhD and sustained publication effort — but the global career opportunities for those who succeed are extraordinary.”
About This Role
Developing new machine learning architectures using pure mathematical proofs and statistical learning theory.
A Day in the Life
Investigates fundamental questions in artificial intelligence — developing new learning algorithms, reasoning systems, and AI architectures, with the goal of publishing findings that advance the scientific understanding of intelligence.
- Identify open problems in AI literature and formulate novel research hypotheses
- Implement new algorithm variants and run controlled experimental comparisons
- Write and submit research papers to top-tier AI conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI)
- Review papers for conferences and journals as an invited referee
- Present ongoing research at internal seminars and external conferences
- Mentor junior researchers and research assistants on methodology and coding standards
- Collaborate with industry partners to translate research into deployable systems
Work Environment
University AI research groups (Moratuwa, Colombo, Peradeniya) and private R&D teams in Sri Lanka. Unlike applied ML engineering roles, AI research scientists spend most time on experimentation and writing rather than production deployment. International collaboration via video calls, shared codebases, and conference attendance is a defining feature of the role.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Academic research schedules are largely self-directed. Conference deadlines drive short intense periods. Industry research labs tend to have more structured hours but maintain flexibility for deep work.

Market Outlook
GROWING
Small but growing demand. The University of Moratuwa is building its AI research capacity and new industry-funded research chairs are emerging. SLINTEC and ITI are expanding computational science capabilities. However, the number of pure research positions in Sri Lanka remains limited compared to applied ML engineering roles.

GROWING
One of the highest-demand research roles globally. Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Meta AI, Anthropic, and Microsoft Research compete intensively for top AI researchers. Academic positions at leading universities are also highly sought. Sri Lankan PhD holders from good universities are competitive for these roles.
