A Day in the Life
Applies machine learning and AI methods to chemical science problems — accelerating drug discovery, materials design, reaction prediction, and molecular property modelling using computational approaches.
- Build and train ML models for molecular property prediction (solubility, toxicity, binding affinity)
- Apply graph neural networks to represent molecular structures for reaction pathway prediction
- Curate and preprocess chemical datasets from public databases (PubChem, ChEMBL, CSD)
- Collaborate with experimental chemists to validate AI-predicted compounds in wet lab
- Develop generative models for de novo molecular design
- Write research papers and present at computational chemistry or AI conferences
- Maintain reproducible experiment pipelines using cheminformatics libraries
Work Environment
Computational chemistry labs at universities (Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Moratuwa) and pharmaceutical or materials research institutes. This is a hybrid discipline sitting between computer science and chemistry — researchers typically work alongside both AI engineers and wet-lab chemists. In Sri Lanka, roles exist at the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), SLINTEC, and the pharmaceutical R&D departments of companies like Astron and CIC Holdings.
