About This Role
Developing AI models to predict protein folding and chemical reactions using linear algebra and chemical kinetics.
A Day in the Life
Applies AI and machine learning to molecular biology problems — modelling protein structure and function, analysing genomic and transcriptomic data, and building predictive tools that accelerate biological discovery.
- Train deep learning models on genomic, proteomic, or transcriptomic datasets
- Apply protein structure prediction tools (AlphaFold) and extend them to novel biological questions
- Process and analyse large-scale biological datasets using bioinformatics pipelines
- Build ML models to predict gene expression patterns, protein interactions, or drug targets
- Collaborate with wet-lab biologists to design experiments that validate AI predictions
- Write research papers for journals such as Nature Methods, Cell Systems, or PLOS Biology
- Present findings at molecular biology and bioinformatics conferences
Work Environment
University biology and biochemistry departments and research institutes in Sri Lanka. Key institutions include the University of Peradeniya (Faculty of Science), University of Sri Jayewardenepura (science faculty), and SLINTEC. Roles are almost entirely computational — working with data rather than physically running experiments. International collaboration with research groups in UK, Australia, or India is common via joint grants and co-authorship.
