About This Role
Using deep learning to discover new chemicals and drugs by modeling physical properties and reactions.
A Day in the Life
Uses AI and generative models to discover novel molecules — designing new drug candidates, bio-active compounds, or functional materials by predicting molecular properties and generating optimised molecular structures computationally.
- Train generative AI models (VAEs, diffusion models, reinforcement learning) to design new molecules
- Screen virtual libraries of AI-generated compounds against target properties using ML scoring functions
- Optimise molecular structures iteratively — balancing potency, selectivity, and ADMET properties
- Validate AI predictions against existing experimental databases (ChEMBL, PubChem, CSD)
- Collaborate with medicinal chemists to prioritise synthesisable candidates from AI-generated sets
- Develop and benchmark new molecular generation architectures
- Publish findings in drug discovery, cheminformatics, or AI journals
Work Environment
Computational research labs at universities or pharmaceutical research institutes. In Sri Lanka, roles exist at SLINTEC, the Industrial Technology Institute, and university chemistry and biochemistry departments. Molecular discovery AI researchers typically work closely with experimental chemists who synthesise and test the AI-proposed compounds, creating a tight computation-experiment feedback loop.
