About This Role
Developing AI/ML models to discover new drugs and materials using physics-informed neural networks.
A Day in the Life
Applies machine learning and AI methods to physical science problems — accelerating materials discovery, solving differential equations, modelling physical systems, and advancing physics research through computational intelligence.
- Develop physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to solve complex partial differential equations
- Train ML models on materials science datasets to predict crystal structures and material properties
- Apply deep learning to experimental physics data — particle physics, astrophysics, climate modelling
- Collaborate with experimental physicists to design AI-assisted experimental workflows
- Benchmark AI methods against classical physics simulation approaches
- Write research papers for physics and computational science journals
- Present at physics or AI conferences — APS, NeurIPS, ICML physical sciences workshops
Work Environment
University physics and materials science departments and government research institutes. In Sri Lanka, relevant institutions include the University of Peradeniya (Physics Department), the University of Colombo, SLINTEC (materials research), and the Arthur C. Clarke Institute. The intersection of AI and physics is a global frontier — most Sri Lankan researchers in this space maintain international collaborations to access the larger datasets and computing resources available overseas.
