Analytical Chemist
Analytical chemistry is the science that underpins the safety and quality of what Sri Lankans eat, drink, and take as medicine. Every pharmaceutical tablet released for sale, every food product exported, and every water sample tested for safety depends on the precision of an analytical chemist's work. The career offers solid job security, internationally transferable skills, and a clear professional progression path. For chemistry graduates who want applied laboratory science with direct public health impact, analytical chemistry is one of the most reliable and rewarding pathways.”
About This Role
Uses sophisticated instruments to identify the chemical composition and structure of substances for quality and safety.
A Day in the Life
Identifies and quantifies chemical substances in samples using advanced instrumentation and chemical analysis techniques — supporting quality control, environmental monitoring, food safety, pharmaceutical testing, and forensic analysis in Sri Lanka.
- Prepare and analyse samples using chromatography (HPLC, GC), spectroscopy (AAS, ICP, FTIR), and wet chemistry
- Calibrate and maintain analytical instruments — HPLC, GC-MS, AAS, UV-Vis spectrophotometers
- Validate analytical methods according to ICH or ISO guidelines
- Interpret analytical results and prepare test reports for clients or QC records
- Maintain laboratory quality documentation — SOPs, calibration records, logbooks
- Investigate out-of-specification (OOS) results and perform root cause analysis
- Ensure laboratory compliance with ISO 17025 or GMP requirements
Work Environment
Analytical laboratories in pharmaceutical companies, food testing laboratories, water testing facilities, environmental monitoring organisations, and government agencies. In Sri Lanka, analytical chemists work at the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), pharmaceutical companies (CIC, Astron, Hemas), food manufacturers, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), and export food laboratories. The work environment is disciplined — quality systems are central to everything.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
