About This Role
Using physical-chemical methods to analyze substances and their physical properties.
A Day in the Life
Characterises the chemical composition, structure, and properties of materials — metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites — using advanced analytical techniques to support materials R&D, quality control, and failure analysis in Sri Lanka.
- Perform elemental analysis of metals and alloys using XRF, OES, and ICP techniques
- Characterise polymer and composite materials using FTIR, DSC, TGA, and GPC
- Conduct surface analysis — XPS, SEM-EDX — for coating and interface characterisation
- Perform failure analysis on engineering components — identify corrosion, contamination, or material defects
- Develop and validate test methods for new materials entering production
- Prepare materials characterisation reports for R&D and quality teams
- Support product qualification with material traceability documentation
Work Environment
Materials testing laboratories at manufacturing companies, research institutes (SLINTEC, ITI), and engineering consultancies. In Sri Lanka, materials analytical chemists work across rubber/tyre, apparel (textile fibre analysis), ceramics, metals fabrication, and construction materials. SLINTEC's materials science division is the primary research employer.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Standard laboratory hours. Failure analysis investigations can require urgent turnaround.
