Designs and manages the equipment used to scale up biological processes from a lab to a factory.
A Day in the Life
Bio-Process Engineers in Sri Lanka design and optimise biological manufacturing processes for pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and industrial enzymes — managing fermentation, cell culture, and downstream processing operations.
- Design and scale up fermentation and cell culture processes from lab to pilot to production scale
- Monitor and control bioreactor parameters (pH, DO, temperature, agitation) during production runs
- Troubleshoot process deviations and implement corrective actions
- Develop and validate cleaning-in-place (CIP) and sterilisation-in-place (SIP) procedures
- Collect and analyse process data to optimise yield and product quality
- Write batch records, SOPs, and process development reports
- Collaborate with quality and regulatory teams to ensure GMP compliance
- Support technology transfer from R&D to manufacturing
Work Environment
Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Shift work and process monitoring can require weekend coverage during production campaigns.
