About This Role
Specializes in the recovery and purification of biological products from complex mixtures after fermentation.
A Day in the Life
Bio-Process Engineers specialising in downstream processing focus on the separation, purification, and formulation of biological products after the bioreactor stage — handling centrifugation, chromatography, filtration, and fill-finish operations.
- Develop and optimise chromatography purification methods (affinity, ion exchange, size exclusion)
- Design and operate tangential flow filtration (TFF) and depth filtration steps
- Monitor product purity and yield at each downstream processing step
- Perform viral inactivation and removal studies as part of biosafety validation
- Write and execute downstream process validation protocols
- Collaborate with upstream teams on process integration and product handoff specifications
- Troubleshoot purification step failures and investigate yield losses
