A Day in the Life
Bioinformaticians specialising in Zoology apply genomic and computational tools to study animal biodiversity, evolution, population genetics, and conservation — supporting wildlife research and species management in Sri Lanka and globally.
- Analyse mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences for species identification and phylogenetics
- Run population genetics analyses to assess genetic diversity and connectivity of animal populations
- Assemble and annotate animal genomes from sequencing data
- Use bioinformatics tools to analyse eDNA datasets from environmental samples
- Collaborate with field ecologists on study design and sample collection logistics
- Contribute to Red List assessments with genetic diversity data
- Publish phylogenomic and conservation genetics findings in scientific journals
- Develop reference databases for Sri Lankan endemic fauna
Work Environment
Typical hours: 42h/week · WLB score 8/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Flexible academic role with field seasons adding variety; good WLB overall.
