Applying statistical algorithms and coding to decode genetic sequences and model biological systems.
A Day in the Life
Bioinformatics Modelers build computational models of biological systems — gene regulatory networks, protein interaction maps, metabolic pathways — to predict biological behaviour and generate hypotheses for experimental testing.
- Construct mathematical or statistical models of gene regulatory or metabolic networks
- Integrate multi-omics data (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics) into biological network models
- Run simulations to predict system responses to genetic perturbations or drug treatments
- Validate model predictions against experimental data from collaborating wet-lab groups
- Develop algorithms for network inference from high-dimensional biological datasets
- Visualise and interpret model outputs for biological interpretation
- Write research papers and present at computational biology conferences
- Maintain reproducible code repositories and analysis documentation
Work Environment
Typical hours: 40h/week · WLB score 8/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Predominantly computational and flexible; excellent WLB in academic settings.
