A Day in the Life
Biosystems Engineers in Sri Lanka design biological components and systems — bioreactors, biosensors, synthetic gene circuits, and bioprocessing equipment — applying engineering principles to harness biological processes for medical, agricultural, and industrial applications.
- Design and fabricate biological devices such as microfluidic chips, biosensors, or bioreactors
- Apply synthetic biology principles to engineer microbial systems for target applications
- Model and simulate biological system behaviour using mathematical and computational tools
- Characterise designed biological systems through laboratory experiments
- Develop and test prototype biological devices in collaboration with biologists and engineers
- Write technical reports, patent applications, and research papers on novel biosystem designs
- Troubleshoot fabrication and biological integration challenges
- Contribute to grant proposals for biosystems engineering research
Work Environment
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Research-driven role with flexibility; project deadlines and prototype testing can extend hours.
