A Day in the Life
Biotechnologists in Sri Lanka develop and apply biological systems and organisms to create products and processes for medicine, agriculture, food production, and industry — working in labs, production facilities, and research institutions.
- Develop and optimise microbial or cell-based production processes for target products
- Conduct genetic modification, cloning, and expression experiments on biological systems
- Perform cell culture, fermentation, and downstream processing at laboratory scale
- Analyse product purity and biological activity using ELISA, PCR, and chromatography
- Document experimental protocols, results, and batch records following GLP standards
- Collaborate with product development, quality, and regulatory teams
- Review scientific literature and contribute to research project design
- Scale up successful lab processes to pilot production scale
Work Environment
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Standard lab hours with good balance; experiment-driven timelines can occasionally extend the day.
