About This Role
Commissions, edits, and manages publication of books — Sinhala, Tamil, and English titles. Major publishers: Godage International Publishers (largest Sinhala book publisher), M.D. Gunasena, Sarasavi Publishers, S. Godage & Brothers, Lake House Publishers (state). Dual role — creative development + project management. Strong language skills (Sinhala and/or Tamil for local titles) essential.
A Day in the Life
A Book Publishing Editor's day involves a mix of creative and administrative tasks, from reviewing manuscript submissions and providing editorial feedback to authors, to coordinating with designers, typesetters, and printers. They manage project timelines, ensure quality control, and might also be involved in marketing discussions for upcoming titles. Communication with authors and internal teams is constant.
- Reviewing manuscript submissions for quality, marketability, and alignment with publisher's vision
- Providing detailed editorial feedback (structural, stylistic, copy-editing) to authors
- Managing the editorial process from manuscript acquisition to final print-ready files
- Coordinating with illustrators, designers, and typesetters on book layout and cover design
- Proofreading galleys and final pages to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Liaising with authors regarding revisions, deadlines, and contractual agreements
- Developing and maintaining publishing schedules and budgets for assigned projects
- Participating in editorial meetings to discuss new acquisitions and publishing strategies
- Writing back cover blurbs, marketing copy, and catalog descriptions for new books
- Researching market trends and competitor titles to identify publishing opportunities
