CNC Programmer is the technical brain behind precision manufacturing — you bridge the gap between an engineering drawing and a perfectly machined part. With one of the most serious skills shortages in Sri Lanka's manufacturing sector, your expertise is genuinely rare and well-compensated. If you enjoy programming logic, precise technical work, and the manufacturing process, this career offers outstanding job security and international mobility.

About This Role

Programs and operates Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to create high-precision metal and plastic components.

A Day in the Life

You write, optimise, and verify CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programs to machine precision metal, plastic, and composite components — bridging design intent and production accuracy in a manufacturing environment.

  • Write CNC programs for turning, milling, drilling, and grinding operations
  • Develop CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) toolpaths using CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360)
  • Set up CNC machines — work-holding fixtures, tool selection, and offsets
  • Carry out first-article inspections and dimensional verification
  • Optimise cutting parameters (speed, feed, depth of cut) for cycle time and tool life
  • Troubleshoot machine faults, tool breaks, and dimensional deviations
  • Maintain and update program library for recurring parts
  • Train and support machine operators on program execution and in-process quality checks

In Sri Lanka, CNC programmers work in export-oriented precision engineering companies in EPZs, the defence industry (Air Force technical workshops), and tool and die manufacturing firms in Colombo and Ratmalana.

Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 6/10 · COMMON overtime

Shift work in production environments. Production deadlines create overtime during peak orders. Generally better than field trades in terms of physical comfort.
