Diamond Grader is a precision, knowledge-intensive role in one of the world's most fascinating industries. Sri Lanka's gem heritage and export industry create a unique local context. GIA qualification opens doors globally to the world's premier gem trading centres — Antwerp, Dubai, Mumbai, and New York. If you are detail-oriented, visually precise, and passionate about gemstones, this is a distinctive and internationally portable career.

About This Role

Specializes in evaluating diamonds based on the 4Cs: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat weight.

A Day in the Life

You evaluate diamonds for quality using the 4Cs (Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat) framework, producing grading reports that determine market value and support international trade in Sri Lanka's premier gem sector.

  • Examine diamonds under 10x magnification for clarity characteristics (inclusions and blemishes)
  • Assess colour grade by comparing stones against master diamond sets (D–Z scale)
  • Evaluate cut proportions — symmetry, polish, and light performance
  • Weigh diamonds on precision scales to 0.001 carat accuracy
  • Produce written grading reports conforming to GIA or equivalent standards
  • Issue and verify laboratory grading certificates for export and sale
  • Verify client-submitted diamonds against existing certificates
  • Maintain calibrated laboratory equipment — microscopes, proportion analysers, colour comparators
