About This Role
Specializes in evaluating diamonds based on the 4Cs: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat weight.
A Day in the Life
You evaluate diamonds for quality using the 4Cs (Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat) framework, producing grading reports that determine market value and support international trade in Sri Lanka's premier gem sector.
- Examine diamonds under 10x magnification for clarity characteristics (inclusions and blemishes)
- Assess colour grade by comparing stones against master diamond sets (D–Z scale)
- Evaluate cut proportions — symmetry, polish, and light performance
- Weigh diamonds on precision scales to 0.001 carat accuracy
- Produce written grading reports conforming to GIA or equivalent standards
- Issue and verify laboratory grading certificates for export and sale
- Verify client-submitted diamonds against existing certificates
- Maintain calibrated laboratory equipment — microscopes, proportion analysers, colour comparators
Work Environment
Gemological laboratory environment — highly controlled lighting (daylight-equivalent D65 fluorescent), clean benches, and precise optical equipment. In Sri Lanka, diamond graders work at the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) laboratory, licensed private gem laboratories, and jewellery export houses. Colombo Fort is Sri Lanka's gem trading hub.
