About This Role
Oversees on-site construction activities, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and safely.
A Day in the Life
Lead the day-to-day delivery of construction projects — managing contractors, site teams, schedule, budget, quality, and safety to ensure the project is built on time, within cost, and to specification.
- Chair daily site progress meetings with subcontractors and site foremen
- Review and update the master construction programme (Primavera/MS Project)
- Monitor material deliveries, labour productivity, and equipment utilisation
- Inspect completed works for quality compliance before interim payment certification
- Review and respond to RFIs (Requests for Information) from contractors
- Conduct site safety walks — identify and close out hazards, review PTW (permit to work)
- Prepare monthly site progress reports for the client and management board
- Resolve day-to-day contractor disputes over scope, payment, and programme
Work Environment
Primarily site-based in the thick of construction activity. Sri Lankan construction is characterised by large labour-intensive workforces, monsoon-season disruptions, and complex multi-party contracting arrangements. Access Engineering, Maga Engineering, and Sanken Construction are among the dominant employers. Large government infrastructure projects under RDA and CEB also employ construction managers. The role demands strong Sinhala and English communication for effective site leadership.
Typical hours: 55h/week · WLB score 4/10 · COMMON overtime
Demanding role with frequent 6-day and occasional 7-day work weeks during critical construction phases. Monsoon-season catch-up often requires extended hours. The most physically and mentally demanding engineering role.
