Quantity Surveyor
If you enjoy the financial and commercial side of construction rather than the purely technical design side, Quantity Surveying is an excellent career. You sit at the intersection of law, finance, and construction — protecting your client's money, ensuring contractors are paid fairly, and resolving commercial disputes. In Sri Lanka the profession has genuine clout, and internationally the RICS Chartered Surveyor qualification is one of the most portable construction credentials in the world. The work is methodical, commercially focused, and carries real responsibility — ideal for people who are precise, commercially minded, and enjoy negotiation.”
About This Role
Estimate construction costs, manage project budgets, prepare bills of quantities, handle contracts, and ensure cost effectiveness.
A Day in the Life
Manage the financial and contractual aspects of construction projects — preparing Bills of Quantities, cost plans, and valuations while advising clients and contractors on procurement strategy and contract administration.
- Prepare Bills of Quantities (BOQ) from architectural and engineering drawings
- Produce pre-tender cost estimates and cost plans for new projects
- Evaluate and compare contractor tenders and prepare contract award recommendations
- Certify interim payment applications from contractors based on measured progress
- Assess, negotiate, and settle contractor variation claims
- Prepare final accounts at project completion — agreeing the final contract sum
- Monitor project cash flow and report cost performance against budget
- Advise on procurement strategy — lump sum, re-measurement, design-and-build contracts
Work Environment
Quantity Surveyors split time between office cost management and site measurement visits. In Sri Lanka, IQSSL (Institute of Quantity Surveyors Sri Lanka) is the professional body, and the AIQS (Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors) is also recognized. The profession is strong in Sri Lanka due to the construction boom — QSs are employed by clients (Employer's QS), contractors (Contractor's QS), or independent PQS firms.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Generally better work-life balance than site-based engineering roles. Tender deadline periods and month-end payment certificate preparation drive overtime. Predominantly office-based with periodic site visits.
