A Day in the Life
Cybersecurity Engineers monitor systems for threats, analyse security incidents, conduct vulnerability assessments, and build defences — balancing proactive hardening with reactive incident response across enterprise infrastructure.
- Monitor SIEM dashboards for security alerts and anomalies
- Analyse and triage security incidents and breaches
- Conduct vulnerability scans and penetration testing
- Implement firewall rules, IDS/IPS configurations
- Review security logs and write incident reports
- Collaborate with DevOps on secure CI/CD pipelines
- Research emerging threats and CVEs
Work Environment
Security operations centre or IT department environment. High focus, sometimes high stress during incidents. Screen-heavy work with multiple monitors.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Generally good WLB except during active incidents or audits. On-call rotation is common in larger organisations.
