Electrical Design Engineer
Electrical Design Engineering is for those who enjoy the precise technical challenge of making complex electrical systems safe, efficient, and code-compliant — all on paper before a single cable is pulled. If you are energised by the logic of system design, enjoy working with CAD tools, and want strong remote and freelance earning potential, this role offers all three. The growing solar and data centre sectors add fresh dimensions, and experienced electrical design engineers with BIM skills have genuine global market reach without leaving Sri Lanka.”
About This Role
Creates detailed electrical blueprints for buildings, factories, and complex machinery using CAD.
A Day in the Life
Produce detailed electrical designs for buildings, industrial facilities, or infrastructure projects — preparing single-line diagrams, cable schedules, panel layouts, and specifications from concept through to construction-ready drawings.
- Design LV/MV electrical distribution systems — single-line diagrams, panel schedules, cable routes
- Perform load calculations, fault level studies, and power factor correction sizing
- Prepare lighting designs using DIALux — lux levels, fixture specifications, emergency lighting
- Size and select switchgear, transformers, UPS, generators, and distribution boards
- Produce earthing, lightning protection, and surge protection system designs
- Coordinate with civil and mechanical disciplines on cable routing and containment
- Review contractor shop drawings and resolve technical queries (RFIs)
- Ensure designs comply with IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), SLS, and PUCSL guidelines
Work Environment
Office-based design role in engineering consultancies or electrical contracting firms, with periodic site visits for design verification. Sri Lanka's construction boom and data centre expansion are driving demand for electrical design engineers. Key reference standards include BS 7671, IEC 60364, and the Sri Lanka National Building Code (NBC). The role feeds directly into the construction sector — every new building, factory, or infrastructure project needs electrical design.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Primarily office-based with predictable hours outside of tender and design submission deadlines. Better work-life balance than site-based engineering roles. International remote design work is increasingly viable.
