A Day in the Life
An Environmental Chemist (Forestry) focuses on the chemical interactions within forest ecosystems. This involves fieldwork to collect samples, laboratory analysis of soil, water, and plant tissues, and data interpretation to understand nutrient cycling, pollutant impacts, and forest health.
- Conduct fieldwork to collect soil, water, foliage, and atmospheric deposition samples from forest sites.
- Analyze samples in the lab for nutrient content (e.g., N, P, K), heavy metals, and organic pollutants.
- Monitor chemical cycles (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur) within forest ecosystems.
- Assess the impact of atmospheric pollution (e.g., acid rain) on forest health and soil chemistry.
- Use analytical instruments like ICP-MS, GC-MS, and ion chromatographs.
- Interpret complex chemical data to understand forest ecosystem dynamics and identify environmental stressors.
