They research upcoming trends, sketch new collections, select fabrics and colors, and oversee the creation of prototypes. This role requires constant innovation, attention to market demands, and collaboration with pattern makers, manufacturers, and marketing teams to bring their designs from concept to runway or retail.
- Researching fashion trends, market analysis, and competitor collections
- Sketching and illustrating new garment designs for seasonal collections
- Sourcing and selecting fabrics, colors, prints, and embellishments
- Creating detailed technical drawings and specification sheets (tech packs)
- Collaborating with pattern makers, sample machinists, and production teams
- Attending fittings and making design adjustments to prototypes
- Preparing presentations for buyers, marketing, or fashion shows
Work Environment
Work primarily takes place in a design studio or office, often within an apparel manufacturing company or an independent fashion house. It's a collaborative and often fast-paced environment, driven by seasonal collection deadlines.
