A Day in the Life
A Fisheries Post-Harvest Specialist focuses on maximizing the value and shelf-life of fish products after they are caught. This involves developing and implementing advanced preservation techniques, optimizing cold chain logistics, and innovating value-added products for both local and export markets. The day often includes lab work, factory floor supervision, and product development.
- Research and develop new methods for fish preservation (e.g., smoking, drying, canning, freezing)
- Optimize cold chain management protocols from landing to processing and distribution
- Design and test value-added fish products (e.g., fish cutlets, sausages, ready-to-eat meals)
- Conduct quality control checks on raw materials and finished products for freshness and safety
- Train processing plant staff on best practices for handling, hygiene, and preservation techniques
