A Day in the Life
A Forensic Scientist (DNA) spends their day applying molecular techniques to solve crimes. This involves receiving and processing biological evidence from crime scenes, extracting and amplifying DNA, performing genetic profiling, and interpreting the resulting data. They are responsible for generating accurate and reliable DNA evidence for legal proceedings and may be required to testify in court.
- Receive, log, and secure biological evidence from various crime scenes
- Perform DNA extraction from diverse samples (e.g., blood, saliva, hair, bone)
- Conduct Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for DNA amplification
- Utilize Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis and capillary electrophoresis for DNA profiling
- Analyze and interpret complex DNA profiles, including mixed samples
- Compare DNA profiles to known individuals or forensic databases (e.g., CODIS-like systems)
- Maintain meticulous records and ensure strict chain of custody
- Prepare comprehensive scientific reports and provide expert witness testimony in court
