A Forensic Scientist (Physical & Chemical) spends their day in the lab, meticulously analyzing non-biological evidence from crime scenes. This involves using a range of scientific techniques and instruments to identify and compare trace evidence like fibers, paint, glass, soil, and chemical residues, preparing detailed reports, and providing expert testimony.
- Receive, document, and manage physical and chemical evidence samples
- Analyze trace evidence (e.g., fibers, paint, glass, soil, gunshot residue) using microscopy and spectroscopy
- Conduct chemical analysis of unknown substances, drugs, and explosives
- Operate and maintain advanced analytical instruments (e.g., GC-MS, FTIR, SEM-EDS)
- Interpret complex analytical data and compare findings to reference databases
- Maintain strict chain of custody and quality control standards
- Prepare comprehensive scientific reports for law enforcement and legal proceedings
- Provide expert testimony in court regarding physical and chemical evidence
