For those drawn to adventure, discovery, and Sri Lanka's ancient gem heritage — mine supervision is one of the most unique, high-risk and high-reward roles in the island's economy.

About This Role

Oversees artisanal gem mining operations — pit management, worker safety, water drainage, and gem recovery. Sri Lanka uses traditional illam (gravel) mining concentrated in Ratnapura basin, Elahera, and Okkampitiya. DGME (Dept of Geological Survey & Mines) regulates mining licences.

A Day in the Life

Supervise gem mining operations at alluvial or deep-pit gem sites in Ratnapura, Elahera, or Okkampitiya, managing mining safety, extraction techniques, rough stone recovery, and mine labour.

  • Plan and supervise daily mining operations at gem pits
  • Oversee pit excavation, illam (gem-bearing gravel) extraction, and sluicing
  • Inspect and collect rough gem yield from mining operations
  • Ensure mine safety compliance — shoring, oxygen testing, water management
  • Maintain production records and rough stone recovery logs
  • Coordinate with pit owners and GSMB (Geological Survey and Mines Bureau) on licences
  • Manage and pay mining gang wages and daily costs
