About This Role
Oversees artisanal gem mining operations — pit management, worker safety, water drainage, and gem recovery. Sri Lanka uses traditional illam (gravel) mining concentrated in Ratnapura basin, Elahera, and Okkampitiya. DGME (Dept of Geological Survey & Mines) regulates mining licences.
A Day in the Life
Supervise gem mining operations at alluvial or deep-pit gem sites in Ratnapura, Elahera, or Okkampitiya, managing mining safety, extraction techniques, rough stone recovery, and mine labour.
- Plan and supervise daily mining operations at gem pits
- Oversee pit excavation, illam (gem-bearing gravel) extraction, and sluicing
- Inspect and collect rough gem yield from mining operations
- Ensure mine safety compliance — shoring, oxygen testing, water management
- Maintain production records and rough stone recovery logs
- Coordinate with pit owners and GSMB (Geological Survey and Mines Bureau) on licences
- Manage and pay mining gang wages and daily costs
Work Environment
Open-air and underground mining sites in Sri Lanka's gem-bearing districts: Ratnapura (Sabaragamuwa), Elahera (Central), Okkampitiya, and Tissamaharama. Physically demanding, outdoor work in often challenging conditions.
