About This Role
Provides official valuations for gems and jewelry for insurance, export, and customs purposes. Works with banks, insurance companies, courts, and customs. The National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) issues official valuation certificates recognized internationally.
A Day in the Life
Provide expert appraisal and valuation services for gemstones and jewellery, issuing certified valuation reports for insurance, estate, customs, and commercial purposes in Sri Lanka.
- Examine gemstones and jewellery using advanced gemological instruments
- Identify gem species, origin, treatments, and enhancements
- Assess quality factors — colour, clarity, cut, carat weight
- Research comparable market prices and issue formal valuation certificates
- Testify as expert witness in legal cases involving gem and jewellery disputes
- Advise clients on gem investment and collection building
- Liaise with insurance companies providing gem valuation reports
Work Environment
Professional valuation office or gemmological laboratory with advanced testing equipment. Often independent practice or attached to a certified gemmological institute.
