A Day in the Life
A Genetic Diagnostic Specialist spends their day in a laboratory, analyzing human genetic samples (blood, tissue, saliva) to identify hereditary diseases, chromosomal abnormalities, and genetic predispositions. This involves performing complex molecular biology techniques, operating specialized equipment, interpreting results, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of diagnostic data for patient care.
- Extracting DNA/RNA from various biological samples
- Performing PCR, qPCR, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays
- Operating and maintaining automated genetic analysis platforms
- Analyzing sequencing data and interpreting genetic variants
- Identifying chromosomal abnormalities using karyotyping or FISH techniques
- Documenting test results and preparing diagnostic reports
- Ensuring quality control and adherence to laboratory standards (ISO, CAP)
