A Herbarium Curator spends their day managing and preserving collections of dried plant specimens. This involves accessioning new specimens, ensuring proper storage and environmental control, meticulously documenting data, facilitating research access, and sometimes conducting their own botanical research or educational outreach.
- Receive, identify, and accession new plant specimens into the herbarium collection
- Mount, label, and store specimens according to established curatorial standards
- Maintain environmental controls (temperature, humidity, pest management) to preserve specimens
- Digitize specimen data, including images and collection information, into databases
- Facilitate access to the collection for researchers, students, and the public
- Conduct botanical research, field expeditions, and specimen identification
- Develop and deliver educational programs or exhibits related to plant diversity
- Manage loans and exchanges of specimens with other institutions
Work Environment
