A Day in the Life
A Horticulturalist (R&D) spends their day designing and conducting experiments related to plant breeding, crop improvement, and sustainable cultivation practices. This involves working in labs, greenhouses, and field plots, collecting and analyzing data, and developing innovative solutions to enhance plant growth, yield, and resilience.
- Design and execute experiments on plant breeding, genetics, and propagation techniques
- Monitor plant growth, health, and yield in controlled environments (greenhouses) and field trials
- Collect and analyze data on plant physiology, soil conditions, and environmental factors
- Develop and test new cultivation methods, irrigation systems, and nutrient management strategies
- Identify and evaluate new plant varieties for disease resistance, pest tolerance, and improved characteristics
- Collaborate with botanists, geneticists, and agricultural engineers on research projects
- Prepare scientific reports, present findings, and contribute to publications
- Stay updated on the latest advancements in horticulture and agricultural science
Work Environment
Works in a dynamic environment split between laboratories, greenhouses, and outdoor field plots. The work is hands-on and requires spending time outdoors in varying weather conditions, as well as focused analytical work in a lab. It's often collaborative within a research team.
