A Hydrogeologist (Eco-focus) investigates the intricate connections between groundwater and ecosystems. Their day involves fieldwork to assess groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs), collecting samples, analyzing data on water quality and biological indicators, and developing strategies to protect these sensitive habitats from hydrological changes or contamination.
- Conduct fieldwork to identify and characterize groundwater-dependent ecosystems (e.g., wetlands, springs, rivers).
- Collect groundwater and surface water samples for chemical and biological analysis.
- Monitor hydrological parameters (water levels, flow rates) and ecological indicators (vegetation health, aquatic species).
- Analyze data to understand groundwater-surface water interactions and their impact on ecosystems.
- Assess the ecological risks of groundwater abstraction or contamination.
- Develop management plans for the protection and restoration of GDEs.
- Collaborate with ecologists, environmental scientists, and land managers.
- Prepare scientific reports and contribute to environmental impact assessments focusing on GDEs.
Work Environment
