A Hydrogeologist (Systems) focuses on creating sophisticated computer models to simulate groundwater systems. Their day involves translating real-world hydrogeological data into mathematical equations, using specialized software to build and calibrate models, running simulations, and interpreting complex outputs to predict groundwater behavior and inform water resource management decisions.
- Develop conceptual models of groundwater systems based on geological and hydrological data.
- Translate conceptual models into mathematical frameworks using physics-based flow equations.
- Select and apply appropriate numerical modeling software (e.g., MODFLOW, FEFLOW).
- Input and manage large datasets (geological, hydrological, chemical) for model construction.
- Calibrate models against observed field data to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Run complex simulations to predict groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and water-rock interactions.
- Perform sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification on model results.
- Analyze and interpret model outputs, preparing detailed technical reports and visualizations.
- Collaborate with other scientists and engineers to integrate modeling results into broader projects.
Work Environment
