An Irrigation & Drainage Engineer designs, plans, and oversees the construction and maintenance of water management systems for agricultural lands, ensuring efficient water use and preventing soil erosion. Their day involves calculations, site visits, and project management.
- Conduct feasibility studies and site surveys for irrigation and drainage projects.
- Design irrigation systems (e.g., drip, sprinkler, canal) based on crop needs, soil type, and topography.
- Design drainage systems to prevent waterlogging and soil erosion.
- Perform hydrological and hydraulic calculations for water flow, pipe sizing, and pump selection.
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Supervise the construction, installation, and testing of irrigation and drainage infrastructure.
- Monitor the performance of existing systems and recommend improvements or repairs.
- Collaborate with agronomists, environmental scientists, and local authorities.
