An Isotope Hydrologist uses stable and radioactive isotopes to trace water movement, understand water sources, and assess water quality. A typical day involves collecting water samples from various sources (rivers, wells, rain), preparing samples for isotopic analysis in a lab, operating mass spectrometers, interpreting isotopic data to model hydrological processes, and writing reports on water resource management and sustainability.
- Plan and execute fieldwork for water sample collection from diverse hydrological environments.
- Prepare water samples for isotopic analysis using specialized laboratory techniques.
- Operate and maintain mass spectrometers and other analytical instruments.
- Analyze isotopic data to determine water origin, age, and flow paths.
- Develop hydrological models based on isotopic signatures.
- Collaborate with hydrologists, geologists, and environmental scientists.
