A Day in the Life
A Medicinal Chemist spends their day primarily in the lab, focused on the design and synthesis of new chemical compounds. This involves planning multi-step reactions, executing experiments, purifying and characterizing novel molecules, and analyzing their properties to identify potential drug candidates, often in collaboration with biological teams.
- Design synthetic routes for novel small molecules targeting specific biological pathways.
- Execute complex multi-step organic synthesis reactions in a laboratory setting.
- Purify synthesized compounds using techniques such as column chromatography and recrystallization.
- Characterize new compounds using advanced analytical methods (NMR, MS, HPLC, IR).
- Analyze structure-activity relationships (SAR) to optimize compound potency and selectivity.
- Maintain meticulous records in an electronic lab notebook (ELN).
- Collaborate with pharmacologists and biologists to test compounds and interpret biological data.
- Present research findings in team meetings and contribute to scientific publications.
Work Environment
