A Day in the Life
A Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemist spends their day researching and developing new drugs. This involves designing and synthesizing chemical compounds, optimizing their properties for efficacy and safety, and working closely with biologists and pharmacologists through various stages of drug discovery and development.
- Design and synthesize novel chemical entities (NCEs) for specific therapeutic targets.
- Optimize lead compounds for improved potency, selectivity, and pharmacokinetic properties.
- Conduct multi-step organic synthesis and purification in the laboratory.
- Utilize analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC) for compound characterization.
- Analyze structure-activity relationships (SAR) to guide compound design.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (biology, pharmacology, ADME) on drug discovery projects.
- Maintain detailed experimental records and prepare scientific reports.
- Stay updated on scientific literature, new technologies, and regulatory guidelines in drug development.
Work Environment
