A Clinical Microbiologist focuses on identifying pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) from patient samples to diagnose infections and guide treatment. They work closely with doctors, perform diagnostic tests, interpret results, and advise on antibiotic susceptibility, directly impacting patient care.
- Receive and process patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) for microbial analysis.
- Isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.
- Perform antibiotic susceptibility testing to determine effective treatments.
- Interpret complex laboratory results and provide diagnostic reports to clinicians.
- Advise medical staff on infection control measures and appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
- Maintain quality control and assurance in the clinical microbiology laboratory.
