A Day in the Life
A Natural Products Analyst spends their day in a laboratory, extracting and identifying medicinal compounds from plants and other natural sources. This involves using various chemical separation techniques, operating advanced spectroscopic instruments, and interpreting data to determine compound structures and purity.
- Perform extraction and purification of bioactive compounds from natural sources (plants, fungi, marine organisms)
- Operate and maintain analytical instruments such as HPLC, GC-MS, NMR, and UV-Vis spectrophotometers
- Conduct chemical separation techniques like chromatography (column, thin-layer, flash)
- Interpret spectroscopic data (NMR, MS, IR) to elucidate the structure of isolated compounds
- Quantify active ingredients in natural product formulations
- Develop and validate analytical methods for quality control of natural products
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and prepare technical reports on findings
- Ensure compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and safety regulations
Work Environment
